Looking back on November (2017)

At the end of the month I like to look back on what I’ve done and where I’ve been. On how I felt and what was on my mind. It turned out that my Instagram pictures actually give a pretty good impression. So, I decided to put them together in a blog post. Here’s November where I stayed two weeks in Sarajevo before I took my bike for a ride to the Croatian coast. An exciting month full of social stuff, warm showers, blue skies and new opportunities. Did it! Amsterdam – Sarajevo, (almost) 4000 kilometers on foot

The 24th of March I left Amsterdam to hike for a while. “Walking back to the Balkans”. Why? Because I can, because I like hiking. Because it’s slow, because it’s a perfect way to really see a country. To feel and experience. Because I feel good, being “on the road”. And because I thought it would be a good idea to (re)discover my own country, before heading off to the Balkans.

In this blog I try to give an impression of my journey. I created a video for each country I crossed. Since I’m not carrying a computer with me, I do everything on my smartphone. Writing, blogging, filming and also all the photos I took are shot with my phone. Of course I would like to have the coolest gear to make real bad-ass movies and pictures, but I also believe that it is important to create something personal. That’s why I choose to add music I have been listening to, music that tells something about how I felt. Music that is in a way related to that part of my journey.

Walking back to the Balkans

I want to be on the road. Wander around with everything I need on my back. Being outside, outdoors, sleeping in a tent and strolling through nature. That’s when I feel best. That’s when I feel free. And all the other things will come as they do. What things? I don’t exactly know, I’ll find out along the way. more “Walking back to the Balkans”

Hiking Via Dinarica, crossing the Balkans on foot

Last summer I walked a new long distance trail through the Balkans, the Via Dinarica White Trail. A route that finds its way along countless different mountain ranges, ridges, cliffs, canyons, valleys, rivers, lakes and prominent peaks in the Dinaric Alps, Europe’s largest karst field. A great hike, a beautiful journey and an unforgettable adventure.

After one month preparing and acclimatizing in the Balkans, I started my hike in the lovely Valbona River Valley. Officially Albania is the last section of the route, but I wanted to start with the icing on the cake, Maja Jezercës, the highest peak of the Dinaric mountains. more “Hiking Via Dinarica, crossing the Balkans on foot”

Incredible Croatian Karst

The Via Dinarica is a trail that is still in progress, only in Bosnia and Herzegovina the White Trail is officially open. In the other four countries the route is a combination of old existing trails that all together form a corridor through the Dinarides. With a distance of almost 600 kilometers, the Croatian section covers the largest part of the Via Dinarica.

Although the hiking paths between well-known areas like Dinara, Paklenica, Velebit and Risnjak are often overgrown or don’t exist at all, it has been wonderful to hike and experience this part of the White Trail. To be able to enjoy it the best I could, I choose to walk it my way. more “Incredible Croatian Karst”

Hollandia

It’s one of these days.

Sentimental, melancholic. Tired.

Six weeks in Croatia. I talk about The Netherlands. I don’t know what I feel.

I’m in a town. A big town. Zagreb. I think of Amsterdam. I compare. more “Hollandia”
