BLOG | Ski Hut Gorica, looking back on three months in Mavrovo National Park

The 5th of May I arrived in Mavrovi Anovi, at Ski Hut Gorica to be precise. This mountain lodge has been my home base for May, June and July. In the first place I helped out with the usual things like cleaning and making the beds, helping guests to find their way around and providing them with information to have them explore Mavrovo National Park. But there were also quite a bunch of other jobs such as painting furniture, building lockers and gardening for example….Continue Reading “Work Away at Ski Hut Gorica, how I spent my time”

BLOG | Moj najbolji Vikend

In class we had to write an “essay” about our favourite, or best, weekend. Although it’s not even 150 words, it is my first story in Croatian. Thought it would be fun to share. Prvo smo…Continue Reading “Moj najbolji vikend”

BLOG | Life in Zagreb

At the end of the month I’d like to look back on what I’ve done, on how I felt and what was on my mind. While scrolling through the photos, I immediately got a smile on my face. I like Zagreb. It’s been almost two months since I left the Netherlands and although I thought I didn’t do much, except for learning Croatian, it turned out that I explored quite a bit. So, here’s a photo journal about my life in Zagreb and an unorganized…Continue Reading “Life in Zagreb, two months in Croatia’s capital city”

BLOG | Back to School | City Talk, Zagreb

Dobro došli. Welcome. Doći, argh a ći-verb. Došla sam? Išla, mogla, željela, mislila, gledala – the lala’s and sams dance around the class room. My head is spinning. All verbs I know have changed. Meet the Croatian language. It takes a while for me to realize we’re gonna do the past tense. Excitement, let’s do this. “Bila sam u Sarajev… uhh”, static place, lokativ, ending on -o = srednji rod… u. “Bila sam u Sarajevu.” I was in Sarajevo. Kada? When? I want to say…Continue Reading “Back to School”

BLOG | Hello Zagreb | THE VIEW

When I open my eyes it’s dark, but I know we arrived in Zagreb. Hello Zagreb! The bus waits for a traffic light, when I look to the right I see McDonald’s and the casino. My eyes search for the church, the church on the opposite side of the building I live. Found it. It’s not the prettiest neighbourhood in Zagreb, but I’m excited to be back. Even though I only live and lived here for a few months, it feels like “my” neighbourhood. And…Continue Reading “Hello Zagreb”

BLOG | Crazy Early Spring

At the end of the month I like to look back on where I’ve been and what I’ve done. On how I felt and what was on my mind. I could have posted these photos on Instagram, but I didn’t. Usually February is a bit of a difficult month, it’s not green yet, it’s still cold and the sunrise is terribly late. This year was different though. No, not the sunrise, no. But it was warm and sunny. There were blue skies, nature started to…Continue Reading “Crazy early spring & a microadventure”

BLOG | Trebevic Tales | Up and down

Here I am again, back on my blog and I got another (by the time I post it) old update for you. Here’s the fourth and last part of my Trebević work-away adventure: Trebević Tales #4 “UP and DOWN”. The second half of January It took a while to write this post, because I wasn’t sure what to share and what not. I still don’t know, but what I do know is that I started my blog with the idea to write about what I…Continue Reading “UP and DOWN ~ Trebević Tales #4”

It has been over a month since my last update, but before I move on to new stories, I’d like to write the third part of my “Trebević Tales” series, the episode where we got snowed in. Or snowed out actually. Anyhow. Let me see, I think my last update stopped somewhere on the way down. Down to town. Yes. After almost two weeks on Trebević mountain I desperately needed a shower – wash and brush my hair, that kind of stuff. So, together with…Continue Reading “Snowed in ~ Trebević Tales #3”

BLOG | Mountain Life

The first week on Trebević felt like one big weekend. There were people coming up for tea or coffee, for a warm meal, for a beer or something stronger. There were people spending the night at the hut, there was another volunteer from Brazil and there was a New Year’s Eve party and a New Year’s Day hike. Busy winter holidays. The second week brought some snow, nothing major, but enough to cover Trebević with a fresh white blanket. So so beautiful. Every moment of…Continue Reading “Mountain Life ~ Trebević Tales #2”

BLOG | Trebević Tales

“What are you doing for Christmas? Where will you be at New Year’s Eve? Do you have plans for your birthday?” Same questions every year. More or less same answer every year. “Don’t know, I’ll see.” For me the holidays aren’t anything special. I’d be totally fine hanging out in a hut, shovelling snow, making fire, walk a little, read a little. But to be honest this year I did feel like spending time with friends. Maybe I could do this walking, fire- making and…Continue Reading “The Wild One & Me ~ Trebević Tales #1”

BLOG | Bouldering in Prilep, North Macedonia

The flow took me to Prilep, a town in South Macedonia. Prilep is known for its tobacco and beer and for the boulders. Although I already had an idea what awaited me because I watched the 2014 Petzl Roc Trip video about bouldering in Prilep, but these mountains, these rocks, they left me speechless. Someone said “it’s like a giant randomly dumped huge stones on a mountain” – so true. There are stones everywhere. “Keien” I would say in Dutch, boulders it probably is in…Continue Reading “Bouldering in Prilep, North Macedonia”

BLOG | Sightseeing Ohrid | Early morning

Now I’m in Ohrid I of course want to do some sightseeing. I want to, but at the same time I don’t. I find it hard to switch. It’s almost stressful. I probably do it all wrong, I just walk and walk and and then discover that I missed the most popular sight. Ohrid old town I did get an impression and I did like Ohrid old town a lot. Had a nice chat with a man that has a A. den Doolaard exhibition. I…Continue Reading “Walking around lake Ohrid”

BLOG | Pretty Prizren

First time I was in Prizren I wrote this:  Prizren is definitely worth a visit. It’s a beautiful, old, vivacious town with mountains all around. I’ll definitely come back to be a real tourist, but for now hiking is on my mind. Second time was not even a month later, two weeks maybe. Rosa and I left the Macedonian Mountain Traverse due to bad weather. Better to hide in a city. Totally unplanned and thus again totally unprepared. I still suck at being a tourist tourist…Continue Reading “Pretty Prizren”

BLOG | Caught in a Dream

“I’ll let you part of my dream, if I can be part of yours” Bob Dylan said that “I’ll let you part of my dream, if I can be part of your reality” I said that ~ Sophie Hunger, Sophie Hunger Blues   Caught in a dream I walk the streets. Caught in a dream. Zovem se Eva, ja sam iz Nizozemske, iz Amsterdama. Živim u Zagrebu. I walk. The wind blows. It’s spring. Sada je proljeće, but the winter is still here. Zagreb is…Continue Reading “Caught in a dream”

BLOG | In the middle of a thought

It’s a way of living. I choose to do so. I live on the road. I choose the Dinarides to do so. I’m on my way. There’s no conclusion, I’m rather in the middle of a thought. “What is your message?” a friend asked. “I don’t know.” There are loads of things I want to say, stories I want to tell, thoughts I want to share, places I want to show. But a message? It would be good if I had one. One clear message….Continue Reading “In the middle of a thought”

BLOG | Storyteller

Quite often I loose myself in trying to find answers. The right answers of course. I know that they don’t exist and if they do, that they will change all the time. There are no ultimate answers and that’s OK. I accepted that, but sometimes I forget. I forget that I accepted it. And that it was OK. At the same time, I really like thinking about possible answers. Nuance them, develop them. Talk about them. I like the process. And I like to séé…Continue Reading “Storyteller”

BLOG | Snow and other stuff in Sarajevo

It’s the fifth time that I’m in Sarajevo. I’ve seen pretty much every season, from bloody, bloody hot to freeeezing cold, I only did not see any snow. Until two weeks ago. Caroline, a friend who came to visit me, saw it first. ˝I see something falling from the sky..˝ I got out of bed to check, but couldn’t really see anything. ˝Well, I think it’s the reflection of the light on the dirty windows.˝ The next morning everything was white. No dirty windows, (hmm…Continue Reading “Snooooow in Sarajevo!”

BLOG | Sarajevo City Escape: Into the White Bosnian Mountains

What to do with Christmas and New Year Eve. Same question every year.. Well, since I’m not home or walking home for Christmas, I thought it would be best to escape the city and plan a little trip to the mountains. Apparently I’m not the only one who liked the idea of getting away. My oldest friend from Amsterdam, Caroline, flew to Sarajevo and accompanied me on this beautiful, but freezing cold winter holiday in the Bosnian mountains. The great thing about Sarajevo is that…Continue Reading “Sarajevo City Escape: Into the White Bosnian Mountains”

BLOG | What am I?

I remember that I once tried to write a song when I was a teenager. I just discovered the magic of music and words. I remember me sitting on my bed in my cozy orange room. It was in Almere, during high school. I even recorded it. But my lack of musical talent or the believe that I lacked musical talent, won. It has always been easier to list the things I am not good at. And it has always been easier to avoid the things…Continue Reading “What am I?”

BLOG | Another year

I’ve been a bit quiet the last few weeks. No new stories and no updates. I divide my time between Sarajevo and Zagreb. Between writing and hiking. Travel up and down, pay a visit to the mountains every now and then and meet lots of old and new friends. But what am I up to? I, most of the time, don’t even know myself… All I know is that and don’t want to go back yet. The photo on the left is taken on the…Continue Reading “Another year”

BLOG | Ljubljana full of life

Warm autumn colours, short October days and a dear friend from The Netherlands. The grey rainy sky gives us a beautiful nostalgic feeling. Ljubljana is one of my favourite Middle European cities. It’s small, it’s sweet and even in Autumn it’s full of life. One year ago (plus 3 months) I stood at this exact same spot. Then I had to hide from a heavy July rain, now it’s a sweet sunny October day. While standing there, I realized how much happened and how much…Continue Reading “Ljubljana full of Life”

BLOG | Hollandia

It’s one of these days. Sentimental, melancholic. Tired. Six weeks in Croatia. I talk about The Netherlands. I don’t know what I feel. I’m in a town. A big town. Zagreb. I think of Amsterdam. I compare. Staying in a apartment. Comfortable. The piles of books remind me of home. My cozy little house. I listen to a Dutch composer. Simeon ten Holt, Canto Ostinato. The music gets to me. A friends birthday, I miss her. Hollandia, Amsterdam.

BLOG | What I Talk About When I Talk About Running

Be aware that although the title of this story has the word running in it, it is just as much about my innertrail as it is about running. Trailrunning is hot, just like the outfits. Saturday the 5th of June a bunch of colourful dressed up runners with high-rised socks gathered at Hotel Bjelašnica for the Vučko Trail. Although in the Alps and even in The Netherlands there are several trailrun events every weekend, here in Bosnia and Herzegovina it is still upcoming. This was the second…Continue Reading “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running”

BLOG | Ready to go!

While sitting on my balcony, watching the sunset I realise I am ready. It feels weird, I’m having an amazing time here, but I’m also ready to move on. The adventure I am so much looking forward to is about to begin. Well, that’s not entirely true, the adventure has already started long ago. Life is one big adventure. I’m just moving on. A next chapter. Today I have sent ahead the last package for supplies on the road. Besides maps and directions it contains…Continue Reading “Ready to go!”
